DDR2 667: Moderate SDRAM Memory Module

DDR2 667 is SDRAM type of memory which is specially designed and optimized for systems operating at bus clock frequency of 333 MHz and memory clock frequency of 166 MHz which is just half of bus clock frequency. Thus it assure the name DDR2 meaning Double Data Rate. The concept of synchronous RAM as initiated in 1970and since then the SDRAM memory modules struggled for its position in market and gained its acceptance in the early ninety only.

Before them DRAM modules were the important part of almost all systems, as they provide better response time due to a synchronism. Also SDRAM is more complex than the DRAM as it also allows pipelining of instructions which means the instruction can be read and wait for turn for its execution even though execution of earlier instruction is in progress. Also sd ram has to wait for clock signal to respond to control signal since they are synchronous and thus give late response in comparison to the DRAM modules. DDR2 667 also provides higher data transfer rate with peak rate of 5333 MB/s.

However, the benefits of using DDR2 667 lies in its capability to allow using multiple banks of memory modules for interleaving operations and thus could offer increment in effective bandwidth or data transfer rate. Today SDRAM specification laid down by JEDEC is adopted by almost all manufacturers for inter operability of memory modules produced by them, also maximum permissible power for DDR2 667 as per JEDEC is 1.9 volts.
